Doris Jean “D.J.” Wyatt, 84, of Greenfield, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 10, 2025 at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.
D.J. was a ferocious defender of both her faith and her family. Her faith in God was unstoppable. Her love for her family was only matched by their love for her. Watching her favorite flowers, calla lilies, bloom every year brought her joy, as did the pleasure and aggravation she experienced with her four legged friends.
Doris Jean graduated from Laurel High School in 1958. Then, proceeded to join the United States Air Force where she proudly displayed her love for her country. She was the first woman to be awarded Airman of the Month. Doris Jean retired from AT&T (Lucent Technologies) in 1991 after 31 years of service. As the oldest of 7 children, D.J., set an example for them all to strive toward. Their achievements brought out the proud big sister in her. Her loss will be felt deeply throughout all the generations whose lives she touched. She was loved more than she will ever know.
D.J. is survived by her loving daughters, Charma Budney and Lisa Ann (James) Cook; grandchildren, Joseph Bret Roland and Charma Ann Cook; great grandchildren, Chastin Michael Bryant, Landon James Roland, Ollie Wayne Roland and Jesse James “J.J.” Cook; brothers and sisters, Robert Bruce (Wanda) Wyatt, Sr., Carl Chester (Jill) Wyatt, Judith Ann (Jack) Mehler, Janet Marie (Richard) McCorkle, Ronald Leroy (Kay) Wyatt; 11 nieces and nephews; 31 great nieces and nephews; 20 great-great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Bruce Wyatt and Verna Mae (Halcomb) Lessing, she was preceded in death by a brother, Rufus Emerson Wyatt and a son-in-law, James Cook.
Private services for the family will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Glen Cove Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, Knightstown Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Hancock County PAWS, 1224 W Main Street, Greenfield, IN 46140. Condolences and memories of Doris may be shared at www.hinsey-brown.com.
