Elsie Lea Upchurch

Elsie Lea Upchurch, 95, of New Castle passed away on Monday, June 16, 2025 at Glen Oaks Health Campus. She was born on January 13, 1930 in Stop, Kentucky to Leslie and Essie (Bell) Upchurch.

Elsie worked for Chrysler Corporation for many years, retiring in 1991. She had many hobbies. Just to name a few, she enjoyed playing bingo, flower and vegetable garden and canning her vegetables. She made the best raspberry jelly ever!! Elsie was well known for her homemade cream pies and many kinds of delicious sweets. She was an avid sports fan including the Indiana Pacers, loved watching her children and grandchildren in all their endeavors including 4-H and cheering them on with great enthusiasm. Elsie was always on the move and could outwork anyone. She loved visiting the beach where she would collect shells, feed the seagulls and take long walks. Elsie never let anyone leave her house hungry and never let their needs be unmet in whatever way she could help. 

Elsie is survived by her daughter, Diana Pyle; grandchildren, Tiffani (Scott) Simerly, Keith (Whitney) Pyle, Joe (Danielle) Pyle, Wesley (Rosanna) Young; great grandchildren, Sady, Madison, Gracie, Dillon, Ella, Alexis, Dom, Ryan and Weston; great-great grandchildren, Jaxson, Navy and Jaidon; siblings, Eula VanNote, Elva Nell “Shortie” Brown; several nieces, nephews and lifelong friends.

In addition to her parents; Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, Everett “Duce” Ray Upchurch; daughter, Sandy Young; siblings, Edna Upchurch, Edith Ramsey, Eunice Barnes, Ethel Marcum and Ernest Upchurch.

Services will be on Friday, June 20, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Paul Davis officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital at www.stjude.org. Envelopes will also be available at the funeral home.
