Emma Clayborn

February 12, 1920 — November 16, 2008

Emma Lou Clayborn, age 88, of New Castle, went to her heavenly home, Sunday, November 16, 2008 at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. She was born February 12, 1920 in Finchville, Kentucky to the late Reverend William and Mrs. Nora (Todd) Smith.

She attended Lincoln College, now known as Eastern Kentucky University. She worked at the New Castle State Developmental Center for many years as a supervisor. She was a member of Wiley United Methodist Church where she was president of the United Methodist Women, Pastor Parish committee, and was a member of the Friendly Dozen. She was worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star Bathsheba Chapter #37 and had held a grand office. She was also a member of the Daughter of Isis Tyre Court Chapter #82. She was a loving mother and grandmother and was affectionately known by many as the “Mayor of 6th Street”.

Survivors include six children: Donna Jane Davis of New Castle, Debra Jean Merida of New Castle, William Alexander “Sonny” (wife: Amy) Clayborn III of New Castle, Ernest Charles “Skippy” Clayborn of New Castle, Anthony “Tony” (wife: Susan) Clayborn of Kalamazoo, MI and Dianne Clayborn of New Castle; twenty five grandchildren; thirty six great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; a brother: Reverend James Rufus Todd of Louisville, KY; several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews and a host of friends who called her “Mom”.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: William A. Clayborn II in 1983; a daughter: Connie Mae Douglas; brothers: Willie Lee, Richard and Leonard Smith and John Henry Todd; a sister: Josephine Todd.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 22, 2008 at Wiley United Methodist Church in New Castle with Reverend Ralph Newkirk officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Friday, November 21, 2008 at the church. Eastern Star Rites will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. at the church. Arrangements are entrusted to Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Memorial contributions may be given to the Wiley United Methodist Church with envelopes available.
