Evelyn L. Winters

December 6, 1934 — May 5, 2026

Carthage

Evelyn L. Winters, 91, of Carthage passed away while surrounded by loved ones Tuesday, May 5, 2026 at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield. Evie was born on December 6, 1934 in Van Nuys, California to the late Engle Q. and Leona D. Shields. She and her eight siblings grew up in a loving home on Archwood Street, which she spoke about, so very often. Her siblings Bud, Bobbie, Harry, Ray, Jack, Bill and Jim preceded her in death. Her younger sister, Jonie, is left to carry on the many memories they shared.

At 17, she met and quickly fell for the love of her life, Robert L. Winters, who was stationed in the Navy. Six weeks later, they were married on July 4, 1952. Upon celebrating the birth of their three sons in California, they made the move back to Bob’s home state of Indiana in 1959. A few years later came the arrival of their daughter. They were fortunate enough to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary prior to Bob’s passing in 2012.

Evie was known by all for being a kind, loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She loved to cook, care for her home, garden, read, sew and quilt. She also enjoyed traveling, collecting and restoring antiques.

She is survived by her three sons, Ric (Diane) Winters of Carthage, Rob (Jennifer) Winters of Carthage, Dr. Ron (Marla) Winters of Rushville and daughter, Diana (Mark) White of Carthage; seven grandchildren, Allison Winters, Ross Winters, Nic Winters, Aaron Winters, Dr. Jamie Morgan, Andrew Winters and Dr. AJ Winters; twelve great grandchildren.

A special thank you to Bonnie Davis and Carolyn Bonne, who were always there to lend a hand and have shown our family so much love and support throughout this journey. We are also grateful to the exceptional staff at Suburban Hospice and Hancock Regional Hospital who provided her with the utmost level of compassionate care.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Carthage Library. Evie was an avid reader and greatly enjoyed visiting this library with all of its wonderful history. Please make check payable to the Henry Henley Public Library Foundation in “Memory of Evie Winters”. Mail to PO Box 35, Carthage, IN 46115.
