Fern L. Evans, 87, of Mt. Summit passed away Sunday, April 24, 2022 at her residence. She was born in Westport, IN on December 4, 1934, a daughter of the late Carl Lonson and Stella (Rathburn) Manlief.
Fern was a longtime member of Mt. Summit Christian Church where for many years she was the beloved church organist and Sunday school pianist. When building the new Mt Summit Christian Church, she served as the Worship Committee Chairman and she was also a member of the CWF (Christian Women’s Fellowship). She enjoyed singing alto in the church choir and was a former member of the New Castle area choir, known as the Castle Aires.
Fern was a graduate of the Sand Creek High School and attended Ball State University. She retired from the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Home in Knightstown where she served as an administrative assistant following many years of service. When she first moved to Mt. Summit, Fern gave piano lessons for many years. She was an avid gardener and especially enjoyed growing roses. She also enjoyed oil painting, bird watching, traveling with her husband, Dick, to Sevierville, TN and Berea, KY. Fern was an active member of the Red Hat Society and CEEMOH Club.
Survivors include her children, Steve (Cheryl) Evans and children, Jared (Bekah) Evans, Caleb Evans and Mallory Evans; Stephanie Evans; Mark (Holly) Evans and children, Ashley and Ben (Melissa) Evans; Kevin Evans and child, Kyle Evans; great grandchildren, Brenna, Berkleigh and Bryson Evans; sisters-in-law, Marsha (Mark) Eden and Cheryll Evans; and several nieces, nephews & cousins.
In addition to her parents, Fern was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Richard “Dick” L. Evans; siblings, Woodrow Manlief, Ruth Stoneking, Earl Manlief and Claude Manlief.
Services will be at 11:00am Saturday, April 30, 2022 at the Mt. Summit Christian Church. Burial will follow at 2:30pm in Mt. Aerie Cemetery in Letts, IN. Visitation will be Friday, April 29 from 4:00pm-8:00pm at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Memorial contributions may be given to the Mt. Summit Christian Church, P.O. Box 310, Mt.
