Gean A. Criswell, 83, of Straughn passed away unexpectedly Monday, December 8, 2025 at Reid Health in Richmond. He was born on April 27, 1942, in Monticello, Kentucky to the late Alvin Jason and Amanda "Mandi" (Simpson) Criswell.

He attended Union Modoc High School and was also a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving his country with honor and dedication. Gean dedicated more than 50 years to the building and remodeling of custom homes throughout Henry County, showcasing his talent and craftsmanship. His commitment to quality work and attention to detail earned him respect and admiration from clients and colleagues alike.

Beyond his professional achievements, Gean had a passion for the outdoors. He was an avid outdoorsman who relished the joys of hunting and fishing, often sharing these experiences with family and friends. His love for animals, particularly beagles and English setter bird dogs, reflected his deep appreciation for nature. Gean was not only a skilled trap shooter, having participated actively in the A.T.A. (Amateur Trapshooters Association), but also enjoyed showing Appaloosa quarter horses. Gean's involvement in the community extended to his affiliations with various organizations, including the Hoosier Beagle Club and the Farm Land Conservation Club. His family recalls his enthusiasm and joy for spending time with his grandchildren, which were some of Gean's favorite moments.

He is survived by the love of his life, whom he married on September 7, 1985, Joyce Criswell; children, Phil (Stephanie) Criswell, Jeff (Angel) Fleming, Jay (Kevin) Fleming, Jody (Leslie) Fleming; grandchildren, Tyler (Leanna) Fleming, Hannah (Beckett) Hochsteler, Logan Fleming, Jackson Criswell, Alexandra Fleming, Dru Criswell, Caroline Fleming, Clayton and Logan Reno; great grandchildren, Benjamin and Merrin Fleming; siblings, Timothy (Donna) Criswell, Joe Criswell, Lorraine Hurt, Barbara (Ed) Mullens, Rose Mary Fisher, Kay Watkins, and Darlene Runyon and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Estill, James, Rex and Fred Criswell, Louise Crabtree and Evelyn Williams; brothers-in-law, Wendell Crabtree, Bill Williams, Bill Fisher and Steve Watkins; and a sister-in-law, Pat Criswell.

Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 12, 2025 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Burial will follow at Green Hills Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday at the funeral home. Military honors will be conducted by the New Castle American Legion and VFW.
