Gladys Burris

Gladys P. Burris, age 90, went to be with the Lord Sunday, December 21, 2008. She was born December 19, 1918 in Clinton County, Kentucky to the late Joe and Edna (Dalton) Marcum.

She retired in 1983 from New Castle State Developmental Center after 20 years of service. She enjoyed quilting and her family, especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband of 76 years: Roscoe J. Burris of New Castle whom she married January 13, 1932; seven children: Flarncie (husband: Wesley) Culver of Calico Rock, AR, Irene (husband: Jerry) Bevans of New Castle, Lillian (husband: Willie) Lowe of New Castle, Bettie (husband: James) Upchurch of Muncie, James (wife: Pauline) Burris of New Castle, Louise (husband: William) Vance of New Castle, Benny (wife: Vickie) Burris of New Castle; twenty seven grandchildren; several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; a brother: James (wife: Ruth) Marcum of Alpha, KY; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by an infant son: Johnie Randall Burris; three sisters: Ethel Owens, Eva Kempton and Elsie Cumbus; and four grandchildren.

Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. Friday, December 26, 2008 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 27, 2008 with Reverends Rick Davis and James Upchurch at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Green Hills Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions may be given to the State Police Teddy Bear Program or the New Castle, Henry County First Aid Unit with envelopes available at the funeral home.
