Herbert McWhorter

October 11, 1928 — September 27, 2008

Herbert G. McWhorter, 79, a resident of Kokomo, passed away Saturday, September 27, 2008 at the Sunrise Assisted Living Center in Ft. Wayne. He was born October 11, 1928 to the late Charles F. and Mary Mauzie (Carr) McWhorter.

Mr. McWhorter had been a teacher at Union High School in Modoc, Indiana, and an elementary, middle school, and high school teacher in Beech Grove, Indiana. He served as a school administrator in Greenfield, New Palestine, Walton, Kewanna and Knox, Indiana. He retired from the Knox School System in 1992. Mr. McWhorter served his country during the Korean War in the U.S. Army. He served 3 ½ years at Camp Drake in Japan and Ft. Riley, KS. He was a member of Walton Christian Church, Masonic Lodge #389 and American Legion, Walton Post #0418. He enjoyed going to sales and auctions, gardening and caring for German Shepherd dogs.

Survivors, include a son: David Bruce (wife: Dianne) McWhorter of Albion; a daughter: Marietta Kay McWhorter of Greentown; four grandchildren: Rachael (husband: Jake) Sandberg of Winamac, Sarah( husband: Paul) Thompson of Mishawaka, Seth McWhorter of Albion and Emily McWhorter of Greentown; Great Grandchildren: Karsten and Amaylia Sandburg; and two sisters Mildred Hail of New Castle and Martha (husband: Rev. Gene) Bennett of Spiceland and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Mary E., four brothers and two sisters: George, Everett, Delmer, Harold McWhorter and Ollie June Todd and Margie New.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 2, 2008 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Reverends Gene Bennett and Leon Davis officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at the funeral home. Military services will be conducted by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Memorial contributions may be given to the Alzheimer’s Association with envelopes available at the funeral home. Online condolences may be made at www.hinsey-brown.com .
