Hershel C. Marcum, 96, of New Castle passed away Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at Henry Community Health. He was born February 23, 1926 in Nora, Kentucky, a son of the late Tommie and Vesta (Derossett) Marcum.
A veteran of the US Navy and WWII, Hershel proudly served his country on the warship, LST 719. He retired from Chrysler Corporation in 1988 following 30 plus years of service; and proud of the fact that he was retired longer than he worked. Hershel loved spending time with his grandchildren and especially enjoyed attending their sporting events. Known for his immaculate yard, Hershel enjoyed working in his yard, gardening, rocking on his front porch while admiring his work, listening to the scanner and going to horse shows. Hershel was a very giving person and enjoyed doing things for other people; he always gave good advice and was famous for his twenty-dollar handshakes.
Survivors include daughters, Connie Marcum of New Castle and Rhonda (Tom) Wright of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Shawn Tabor of New Castle, Chad (Amy) Tabor of New Castle, Ryan Masters of Carmel, Brittani (Seth) Lee of New Castle, Kevin (Lauren) Wright of Carmel and Kaylee (Eric) Palmer of Cincinnati, Ohio; great-grandchildren, Cameron & Derek Tabor; Addi, Livvi & Mav Lee; Taylor, Selah & Kathryn Wright, Kellyn & Graham Palmer and Paislee Masters; siblings, Arnold Ray Marcum of New Palestine, Ruth York of Louisville & Dale Marcum of New Palestine; and several nieces, nephews & cousins.
In addition to his parents, Hershel was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Marcum; siblings, Pauline Whiles, Cecil Marcum, Lorena McFall, Eva Shelton, Edith Cross and Fay Marcum.
A Celebration of Life will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 4, 2023 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service with Pastors Paul Davis and Tracy Wright officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery. Visitation will be 4:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Military honors will be conducted by a contingent of the U.S. Navy, the American Legion and the VFW.
