James "Buss" VanAlst

July 21, 1920 — October 15, 2008

James H. “Buss” Van Alst, 88, a resident of Sulphur Springs passed away Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie following an extended illness. He was born July 21, 1920 in Englewood, OH the son of James F. and Bessie (Buffener) Van Alst.

He was a veteran of the US Navy serving during WWII. He retired from Chrysler Corporation in July, 1986 after 17 years of service and he had also been employed at Anaconda Wire & Cable and New Castle Welding. He was a member of the Sulphur Springs Lions Club, Jefferson Township Volunteer Fire Dept over 30 years and the Sulphur Springs Masonic Lodge. He was an avid woodworker, boater, hunter, and fisherman. He attended Old Town Hill Southern Baptist Church in Muncie. He enjoyed NASCAR races and was a member of the Middletown American Legion Post 216.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years: Alma (Poer) Van Alst; four sons: Bill (wife: Kathy) Van Alst of New Castle; Gerry (special friend: Roseann) Van Alst of Lake Placid, FL; Jim (wife: Cindy) Van Alst of Yorktown; and Bruce (wife: Teri) Van Alst of Anderson; eleven grandchildren: Michelle, Ryan, Scott, Amy, Tanya, Angie, Tori, Cami, Holli, Greg and Matt; three step grandchildren: Jamie, Lindsay and Jason; fourteen great grandchildren; six step great grandchildren; two sisters: Maggie Strasser of Monticello, IN and Grace Nicholson of St. Paul, MN; four sisters-in-law: Beulah Milne of Sulphur Springs; Marilyn (husband: Junior) of Sulphur Springs; Anita Poer of Anderson; LaVonne Regan of Orange Co., CA; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

In addition to parents he was preceded in death by ten brothers and sisters: John, Deddie, Strode, Jerry, Bob, Moe, Dan, Rose, Dorothy and Charlie.

Services will be at 10:30 AM Saturday, October 18, 2008 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Bruce Reynolds officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery at Knightstown with military rites conducted by the Knightstown American Legion. Friends may call from 5-9 PM Friday, October 17, 2008 and one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Assn. to benefit his wife, Alma.
