Janice Elaine Crider

Janice Elaine Crider, 94, of New Castle, passed away Monday, July 14, 2025, at Copper Trace in Westfield. She was born October 30, 1930, in Hartford City, a daughter of the late Paul Herbert and Mable Barbara (Schwartzkopf) Ford.

Janice was a 1948 graduate of Hartford City High School, where she was a cheerleader, played basketball, and was a member of the Drama Club and Glee Club. She married Kenneth Crider on Christmas Day, 1948, and they were married for 52 years until his passing in 2000.

She and Kenneth owned and operated Crider’s Drive-In in New Castle for over 25 years. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in New Castle, P.E.O. Chapter AD, Tri Kappa Associates, and was an avid reader. She loved to shop at Macy’s (L.S.Ayres). She always conducted herself with grace and class. As she aged, she developed a delightful sense of humor, laughing freely and often. She was a thoughtful, generous, stoic, and caring woman. She was constantly amazed that she had lived to see her 90’s and is finally at peace.

She leaves to cherish her memory, four children, Gregory L. (Rita) Crider of New Castle, Dr. Michael K. (Gina) Crider of Muncie, Jan E. (Amy) Crider of New Castle, and Kim E. Davenport of Noblesville; grandchildren, Bastion Crider of New Castle, Ben (Sarah) Crider of SC, Alex (Victoria) Carter of New Castle, Kaitlyn Carter of New Castle, Kristin Crider (Rob Raschke), Kelly (Matt) Lindgreen, Devon (Chad) Bell of New Castle; Oni Davenport of Noblesville; great grandchildren, William, Thomas and Michael Crider, Magnolia and Robert Carter, Melanie and Hallie Fearin, and Brody and Ava Bell; a sister, Mary Ann Miller of Grable.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul “Johnny” and Mable Ford; husband, Kenneth Crider; sister, Martha Sanford, and a brother, Herbie Ford.

Services will be private at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. Burial will be in South Mound Cemetery, West Lawn Addition. Memorial contributions may be given to Riley Children’s Hospital. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.hinsey-brown.com.
