Jeffery David Davis

June 5, 1968 — December 25, 2025

New Castle

Jeffery “Jeff” David Davis, 57, of New Castle went home to be with our Lord and Savior, Thursday, December 25, 2025 at his residence following a brief illness. He was born June 5, 1968 to David D. and Sue (Cheap) Davis of New Castle, Indiana.

Jeff was a native of New Castle, Indiana. He graduated New Castle High School where he played sports and excelled in Speech and Debate. He attended Indiana University and later moved to Richmond, Virginia where he married Logan, and started a family.

Jeff was a pioneer—one of the rare few who sensed the future of Linux operating systems before the rest of the world caught up. He committed himself to that path with unwavering conviction, choosing Linux not merely as a career specialization but as a calling. From that moment on, he never looked back. His vision led him to found the Richmond Linux Users Group (RMLUG)—a community that brought together Linux enthusiasts, experts, and professionals across the Richmond, Virginia area.

As a gifted systems administrator and business owner, Jeff approached every challenge with ingenuity and precision. He specialized in creating tailor‑made solutions for small and mid‑sized businesses—systems built not just to function, but to empower. In one instance he coaxed a Red Hat cluster into performing a task that even Red Hat’sown engineers called impossible. To Jeff, the “impossible” was nothing more than an invitation to prove what could be done.

“Jeff may have taken the spirit of Star Trek’s Chief Engineer Scotty a bit too literally – and the world is better for it.”

With an interest in prepping, Jeff became an Amateur Radio operator, quickly advancing to Amateur Extra in two years time, participating in many Ham Radio volunteer opportunities, leading him to become President of one of the local Ham Radio clubs.

Jeff became a Christian, quickly coming to embrace Reformed theology with the same fierce dedication that defined every other part of his life. He spoke of how he felt the Holy Spirit reshape him, renewing him from within. As he grew, he began to have a greater love for knowledge of truth and teaching young people; leading him to volunteer in Trail Life and teach for a home school co-op. He brought that renewed spirit, passion, dedication and determination to meet the needs of his church.

Above all, Jeff loved his family without condition or reservation. He cherished Logan, and often said that his greatest accomplishments—the ones that mattered far beyond any technology breakthrough—were Alexandra and Catherine. He was eternally proud of the remarkable women they have become.

Jeff lived boldly, gave generously, and believed fiercely. He was the kind of person who lifted everyone around him. If someone needed help, Jeff was always the first to step forward. If someone sought guidance, he became their mentor. He leaves behind not just memories, but a legacy stitched into code, community, faith, and family. His impact lives on in every life he touched and every moment he transformed from ordinary to extraordinary.

For his family and close friends, he was taken way too soon, but we know it was in the Lord’s own good time. We will miss his words of wisdom, his patience and guidance, his logical and sometimes technical explanations, his warm bear hugs and his unending love for the Lord, his family, and life. He was a beloved husband, nurturing father, best friend, wise teacher and guide whose passing left a gaping hole in our hearts. He will be deeply missed by us all.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Logan Davis; daughters, Alexandra and Catherine Davis; mother, Sue Davis; a sister, Shelly (Scot) Burris; former brother-in-law and close friend, Mark Taylor; an uncle, Michael Cheap, and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, David D. Davis; infant brother, Mark Davis; maternal grandmother, Dorothy Curry, and paternal grandmother, Edna Davis.

2 Cor. 5:15 And he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him, who for their sake, died and was raised.
