John Hurst Ankrom

John Hurst Ankrom, 93, of New Castle went to be with the Lord on Tuesday evening, May 20, 2025 at the home of his daughter, Brenda and Bruce Orr. He was born January 13, 1932 in Henry County to the late Walter and Harriett (Raffensbarger) Ankrom.

John was a veteran of the US Army serving during the Korean War, in the 2nd Infantry division, 2nd division artillery headquarters and headquarters battery. He was a recipient of two bronze medals for keeping Jeep’s #12 and 13 in immaculate condition. His Jeep companion was his trusted dog, Gertie who was his constant protector. John attended the Honor Flight #41 in October of 2023. John retired from Delco Remy in Anderson in 1993 after over 38 years of service. He had previously lived in Knightstown and Greenfield. A faithful member of the South Side Church of Christ, he loved the Lord above all else. John and his wife, Priscilla owned and operated a floral shop for many years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening and was also a collector of antiques. Most of all, John loved spending time with his family.

He is survived by two daughters: Brenda Mae (Bruce) Orr of New Castle and Catherine L. (Mark) Moore of Clinton, Wisconsin; a son: John I. (Dorothy) Ankrom of Tipton; 11 grandchildren: John Michael (Crystal) Ankrom, Esta Mae Denny, Christina (Brandon) Conyers, Tiffany (Nate) Wooten, Lesli Denny, Joshua Ankrom, Alycia (JR) Sutton, Marcus Moore, Derek (Alissa) Orr, Nikki (Matt) Daffron and Neva Orr; 27 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; brother: Steve Ankrom of Greenville, NC; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Priscilla Mae Ankrom; daughter, Diana Lingenfelter; granddaughter, Rebecca “Becky” Ankrom; a great-granddaughter, Alice Ankrom; siblings, Dr. Maurice E. Ankrom, Bonnie N. Shay, Marie Scott, Raymond Ankrom, Michael Ankrom and Sandra Dale.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2025 Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pat McDaniel officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery, West Lawn Addition with Military rites will be conducted by contingents of the US Army, American Legion and the VFW.
