Joseph Griggs

Joseph J. Griggs, Jr. age 76, of Mt. Summit, passed away Thursday, January 8, 2009 at Henry County Hospital. He was born March 16, 1932 in Salt Lick, Kentucky to the late Joseph and Mytrle (Harry) Griggs, Sr.

He assisted Glen Young building homes in New Castle and retired from Borg Warner after 42 years of service. He was a member of Mt. Summit Christian Church, Sulphur Springs Masonic Lodge and member of the Prairie Township Fire Department for over 30 years. He owned T and J Auto Sales and was an avid Dale Earnhardt fan. He was a great dad to his children and foster father to many children whom he loved. He was a friend to everyone, was a great listener, had great wisdom and was a straight talker.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years: Rosemary (Smoot) Griggs of Mt. Summit; children: Joseph Allen (wife: Janette) Griggs of Knightstown, Michael Dewayne (wife: Kim) Griggs of Tucson, AZ, Rebecca Jane (husband: Christopher) Bennett of Kokomo, and Christopher (wife: Angie) Griggs of New Castle; grandchildren: Robert Griggs of Mt. Summit, Marie Bennett of Middletown, David Bennett of Kokomo, Joey Griggs of Bradenton, FL; great grandchildren: Prestyn Bennett of Middletown, Austin Griggs of New Castle, Isabella Rae Bennett of Kokomo, and Ava Griggs of FL; a brother: Jack (wife: Bonnie) Griggs of Jacksonville, FL; several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by twelve brothers and sisters; a daughter: Cynthia Ann Griggs.

Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at Mt. Summit Christian Church with Reverend Mark O’Brien officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Summit Cemetery. Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. Monday, January 12, 2009 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. The Sulphur Springs Masonic Lodge will conduct a service at 8:30 p.m. Monday, January 12, 2009 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be given to the Mt.
