Larry “Kay” Mikel, 77, of New Castle and former longtime resident of Spiceland passed away Saturday, April 6, 2024 at his residence. He was born on July 13, 1946 in Monticello, KY a son of the late James Mikel and Vema (Rigney) Western.

Larry was a very loving caring family man that loved spending time with the lights of his life, his grandchildren. In 1966, Larry began working for Outokumpu Steel (New Castle Stainless Plate) and served there for 42 years until his retirement in 2008. He was also an active member of the UAW Local 729 where he also served as a committee person along with serving on the bargaining committee. Larry was an avid NASCAR fan and although he liked many drivers over the years, Jeff Gordon and Bill Elliott are at the top of Larry’s list. He also loved to go places and travel, especially to the mountains.

Larry is survived by his wife, Janet (Neal) Blevins-Mikel of New Castle; children, Sabrina (Rich) Sidwell of Spiceland, Heather Mikel of Lafayette; grandchildren, Ryan (Kim) Sidwell of New Castle, Kelsey (Kiera) Mikel of Somerset, KY, Mitchell (Hailey) Mikel of Somerset, KY and Tyler (Chelesa) Sidwell of New Castle; great grandchildren, Raegan, Meradith, Ripley, Roman, Bella, Daisy May and Severus; step-children, Jeff (Cristi) Blevins of Louisville, KY and Julie (Shane) McGaughey of Mt. Summit; step-grandchildren, Caroline Blevins of Carrollton, TX and Levi Blevins of Lexington, KY; step-great granddaughter, Inessa Rose Gibbs; special campground “granddaughter”, Kinsey “KK” Guffy; sisters-in-law, Jama Gorman and Geneva Neal; brothers-in-law, Jim “Noel” Neal and Ronnie Gorman; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia Mikel in 2010; children, Scott and Steven Mikel; two infant children, Larry Allen and Christy Ann; sister, Linda Denney; Mama and Papa Rigney; mother-in-law, Lousie Neal.

The family would like to thank the home care team, Nikki, Chrystal, Tina, Beth and Christa from the Henry County Hospice that provided wonderful care for Larry during his battle.

Services will be held at 11:00am Thursday, April 11, 2024 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with grandson, Ryan Sidwell and Rev. Gene Bennett officiating. Burial will follow in Circle Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00pm- 8:00pm Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be given to the Henry County Hospice or the Local UAW 729. You may express condolences or share memories of Larry at www.hinsey-brown.com.
