Leland King Roberts “Shorty”, 86, of rural New Castle died Saturday morning June 20, 2015 at his home after an extended illness. He was born in Stuttgart, AK on September 12, 1928 to the late Luke O. and Bessie (Smith) Roberts.
Leland was raised in Wayne County, KY before moving to Lewisville, IN. He worked at Chrysler Corporation before joining the service from 1951-1953, later starting his own companies: Leland Roberts Construction, Roberts & Ferrell Pipeline, Roberts Pipeline and Roberts Farms. Leland enjoyed working and in later years fishing, hunting, traveling, working on his farm with his longhorn cattle in Vevay, IN and telling a good joke. He was a member of Lewisville Masonic Lodge 72, Scottish Rite, Valley of Indianapolis, Murat Shrine, Amvets, New Castle American Legion and Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels.
Leland is survived by a son, Gary L. (Terri) Roberts, one grandson, Jason C. (Morgan) Roberts, a great grandson, Benjamin Roberts all of New Castle; one sister, Edna Mae Fulkerson of Louisville, KY; a brother, Edwin Ray Roberts of LaGrange, KY; special friend and caregiver, Diane McCallister of Middletown and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Rubye Gehring, Ruth Steele, Audrey Hudson, Eloise Roberts and one brother, William Lyle Roberts; and step-son, Keith Riggs.
Services will be at 10:30 AM Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Mick Saunders officiating. Burial will follow in Lewisville Cemetery.
