Lewis Hayden Butler, 85, of Knightstown passed away Thursday, December 18, 2025 at his residence. He was born March 22, 1940 in Morehead, Kentucky a son of John Henry and Stella A. (Egan) Butler.
A Knightstown resident for most of his life, Hayden worked for Sharp Oil Co. before owning and operating Checker Service Station in Knightstown. He then worked for Gas America for forty-seven years. He served as the Town Court judge in Knightstown for 15 years, retiring in 2011. He also served on the Knightstown Town Board and worked maintenance at the Henry County Youth Center.
Hayden was a member of the Knightstown Masonic Lodge, and had just received his 50 year pin, of which he was proud. He was also a member of The Order of the Eastern Star. He loved walking his dog, Sadie, who was alongside him everywhere he went.
He had a passion for auto racing and for the majority of his life, raced and was involved in several different capacities of drag and circle track racing.
He leaves to cherish his memory, five children, Jeff (Cyndy) Butler of New Castle, Lisa (Ric) Hall of Knightstown, Ronnie (Amelia) Back of Knightstown, Carrie Stemler of New Castle, and Heidi (Gabe) Carmichael of Knightstown; son in law, Tim Johnson of Knightstown; grandchildren, Carly (Craig) Foreman, Jace Butler, Trista (Jordan) Pruett, Taylor Cox, Shelby (Jordan) Van Hoy, Cale (Kim) Johnson, and Logan (Kaylee) Johnson, Danielle (Eric) Schlechtweg, Haley (Chris) Waldschmidt, Eli Johnson, Brittany (Josh) Milo, Keaton (Fania) Stemler, Patrick (Carly) Henry, Nicholas (Hannah) Henry, Sarah Stemler, Emma (Bruce) Nichols, Mason Carmichael and Landon Carmichael; several great grandchildren; a brother, Harold (Janet) Butler of Knightstown; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Raeann Johnson; granddaughter, Crysten Butler Williams; a great grandson, Jett; his longtime companion, Carol Duncan; four sisters, Letha Redmon, Naomi Jackson, Sheila Rawlins, and Charlene Jensen; six brothers, Arnold, Richard, Leon, John, Carl and Ray Butler.
Visitation will be from 4-8 PM Monday, December 22, 2025 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, Knightstown Chapel and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Funeral service will be at 11:00 AM Tuesday, December 23, 2025 at the funeral home with Pastor Tony Darling officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery.
