Louise M. Catey, 84, of Selma and formerly of New Castle, passed away Wednesday, September 7, 2022 at her residence. She was born January 9, 1938 in New Castle, Indiana, a daughter of Charles T. and Olive M. (Kelley) Draper.
Louise graduated from New Castle Chrysler High School in 1956; Ball State University, Bachelor of Science in Early Elementary Education in1970; Ball State University, Masters in Education in 1972. She was active in her community and a member of Delta Kappa Gamma; Henry County 4-H and adult leader, lifetime member of the Henry County Saddle Club, lifetime member of First Friends Quaker Meeting House, served as the children’s story teller during church services each Sunday.
Louise was awarded Outstanding Young Educator in 1973. Louise loved children and she was a teacher for 32 years. She worked with young children at the New Castle Public Library as a storyteller and on the Book Mobile. Louise loved walking in the woods, hunting wildflowers and morel mushrooms. She spent many days during her retirement gardening, walking in the woods and spending time with her granddaughters, whom she adored. Louise and her husband loved to travel, dance, and spend time together going to New Castle High School athletic events together. Once her granddaughters became involved in sports, Louise and Harold never missed one of their sporting events. She sat along the sidelines cheering them on and even though she wore green for school colors all her life, she would proudly put on red for her granddaughter’s high school events, even when competing against her high school alma mater.
She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer M. (Kevin) Buchanan; granddaughters, Katelyn M. (Jacob) Butler, Hannah N. Buchanan.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Harold L. Catey; and son, Jeffrey T. Catey.
A Special thanks to all of the caregivers that allowed Louise be able to sit on the porch, and enjoy her years at home with her family!
