Mark Andrew Baker, age 66, of New Castle, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at Henry Community Health. Born on April 18, 1959, in Muncie, Indiana, Mark was the son of the late Willard Wilson and Ruth Irene (Dick) Baker.
He was a 1977 graduate of Shenandoah High School, where he made history as the first Raider wrestler to qualify for the state wrestling meet. He later joined the family business, working alongside his father at Bill Baker Insurance beginning in 1982, and eventually retired as co-owner in 2024.
Mark had a magnetic personality—funny, lighthearted, and always ready with a joke or tall tale. A natural storyteller, he brought warmth and laughter wherever he went. He was the kind of man who would show up for anyone in need, no matter the circumstances.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and uncle, Mark poured his heart into his family. He especially enjoyed helping his grandsons get involved with four-wheelers and firearms, sharing his passions and life lessons. A true jack of all trades, he was a talented woodworker and handy with just about anything. He loved being outdoors—whether camping and fishing, but most of all, Mark was an avid golfer.
Mark also had a passion for music and was well-known for his karaoke performances, especially his lively renditions of Johnny Cash classics like “Ring of Fire” and “Folsom Prison Blues.” A sports enthusiast, he coached many sports over the years, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of many young athletes. He and his wife Melanie cherished their Florida vacations, often staying several weeks at a time to relax and enjoy the sun.
In addition to his many accomplishments, Mark had a brush with Hollywood—appearing in the 1979 film Breaking Away.
Mark is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Melanie (McClurg) Baker of New Castle; children, Heather (Donnie) Reimer of Greenfield, Erik (Jessica) Baker of Noblesville, and Whitney (Christopher) Humes of New Castle; grandchildren, Johnny and Justin Reimer, Ryleigh Baker, and Keeleigh, Gabe, and Merrick Humes; sister, Kimberly S. Baker Ondras (Layne Haney) of Fortville; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mark was preceded in death by his brother, Del Alan Baker, and a nephew, Ryan Dean Ondras.
Services will be held at 7:00pm Wednesday, July 30, 2025 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Mike Crabtree officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00pm until the time of service on Wednesday. You may express condolences or share memories of Mark at www.hinsey-brown.com.
