Maxine Clark, 103, of Knightstown was surrounded by loved ones when she went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 9, 2024. She was born March 13, 1920 in Knightstown, Indiana, the daughter of Earl and Gladys (Sleeth) Leisure. Maxine married the love of her life, Wendell, on June 26, 1940. Maxine was the matriarch of her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.
Maxine was a devout Christian and she served as a member of the Knightstown First Christian Church, attending every Sunday until it became too hard for her to do so. Even when she was homebound, Maxine made an effort to attend services virtually, dedicating every Sunday to time with the Lord.
In addition to enjoying spending time with her family, she loved to play golf, baking, crocheting, knitting and sitting on her back porch swing. She was never afraid to learn a new craft. She took classes to learn how to weave baskets and also in oil paintings. Many of Maxine’s painting are still hanging in her family’s homes today!
Maxine loved traveling with her husband and good friends Marge and Paul Walker. She even had a map of the United States, and would put a push pin in every place in which they traveled.
Maxine was a hard worker. She operated the Knightstown License Branch out of her home in the 1940’s. She also worked for the postal service and in the optometrist office in Knightstown.
When her husband went to serve in WWII, she became part of a sorority of sisters who took care of each other during this time. They would trade resources, such as sugar and gas, and would always look after one another while their husbands were away fighting in the war. Maxine truly showed how strong of a woman she was during this time by taking care of her sons while her husband was away.
Maxine never let getting older stop her. She was still spring cleaning her house in her 90’s and would always go for her morning walks. She was truly a woman with strength, dignity and determination, never letting age stop her from doing what she loved.
Maxine will be missed by many, as she left a huge impact on a lot of lives in her 103 years. Left to cherish her memory are her children: Phil (Sharon) Clark of Wilkinson, Connie Lewis of Shelbyville, Kathy Adkins of Knightstown and daughter-in-law, Judy Clark of Fort Wayne; grandchildren: Jeff (Wendy) Clark, Angie (Mark) Hamer, Stephanie (Rama) Donepudi, Ann Marie (Anthony) Darling, Amy (Shawn) Brown, Katrina (Ron) Weddle, Laura (John) Humphrey, Kristin (Steve) Burton; seventeen great grandchildren, eighteen great-great grandchildren, a special niece, Waynetta Dunn; and several other nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and siblings, she was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Wendell; son, Terry Clark; sons-in-law, Larry Lewis and Marion Adkins.
Services will be at 1:00 PM on Saturday, March 16, 2024 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service Knightstown Chapel with Pastor Anthony Darling officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until time of service.
