Monta Faye Riggs

Monta Faye (Adkins) Riggs, 78, of Knightstown, formerly of Shirley, passed away Sunday, October 18, 2026 at her home. She was born December 30, 1947 in Rush County, the daughter of Rose Ann (Hood) and Marion Adkins, Jr.

Monta was employed at Gas America in Shirley and retired from Riggs Real Estate and Appraisal where she worked with her husband for 15 years.

She loved her family deeply and found her greatest happiness in caring for the people she loved. Her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins held a special place in her heart. To her grandchildren, she was simply the best Mammaw, happiest when they were visiting so she could cook for them, spoil them, and wait on them hand and foot. Personally delivering everyone, especially her husband, their meals on a TV tray.

Home was her favorite place to be. She didn’t have a great desire for travel when she could enjoy the comfort of her own surroundings, tending her plants and flowers and working in her yard. Her care and pride in her home earned her Knightstown’s Best Curb Appeal award. She loved shopping and decorating for the holidays, making the home she cherished a welcoming place for those she loved.

She was a member of the American Legion Post 152 Ladies Auxiliary and treasured her monthly luncheons with her high school Class of 1966. She enjoyed a glass of wine, laughter with friends, and the friendships she carried through the years. She also had a special knack for finding luck, countless four-leaf clovers, always pressed and kept.

She gave so much of herself to others, caring for countless people throughout her life. Our family will remember her selflessness and the feeling she left us with of truly being cared for and loved. If we said we liked it, it was ours. We were hungry for it, it was on the table. Needed it, she made a way for it. We miss her beyond words, but we find comfort knowing she is reunited in Heaven with her brother, mother and father.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 60 years, Michael Riggs, whom she married November 20, 1966; son, Jeff (Lara) Riggs of Greenfield; daughter, Jenny Riggs of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Zoë (DJ), Trent and Raquel; sisters-in-law, Kathy Adkins and Marilyn Sue Riggs; three nieces, Ann Marie, Amy and Katrina; nephew, Rich; several cousins, great nieces and great nephews.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a brother, Marion Adkins III.

A Celebration of Life will be held as a casual open house from 12:00 - 4:00 PM Saturday, November 7, 2026 at The Wild Rose (formerly St. Rose Catholic Church) 8150 W. US Hwy 40, Knightstown, IN 46148. Memorial contributions may be made to Sue Ann Wortman Cancer Center, 801 N State St. Greenfield, IN 46140.
