Monte Jay Jackson, 72, of New Castle, Indiana, passed away peacefully. Born in New Castle on July 23, 1952, Monte was a cherished son, father, brother, friend, teacher, and musician who left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Monte graduated from Walter P. Chrysler Memorial High School in 1970 and went on to attend Vincennes University, graduating in 1972 with a degree in Architectural Drafting. He taught drafting at New Castle Chrysler High School, worked with Gary Weaver and Dan Jones, Modernfold in New Castle, and retired from Ball State University as a Draftsman. He spent the majority of his life in his hometown of New Castle, where he was always ready with a joke, a story, a song, a line from a Monty Python movie, or a heartfelt conversation.
Monte was a gifted musician—a talented guitarist and a wonderful singer. He played in many bands over the years including Jesse, Taxi, 10:01, The Sofakings and, most recently, Shiner and BarneStorm. He deeply loved his bandmates and thought of them as family. His love for music extended to the broader community through his involvement with the Henry County Art Association, where he helped organize a free concert series that brought people together to enjoy live music in a welcoming, inclusive setting.
Monte’s artistic talents and designs reflected his creative spirit. He was a card-carrying member of The Beatles Fan Club since the 1960’s and scholar of The Beatles with no fact too insignificant to pique his interest. As a fixture at the local breakfast group, he engaged in spirited, witty conversations with friends regularly.
Monte is survived by his sons, Andrew Thomas Jackson (Seattle) and Derek Jay Jackson (Boston); his brother, Brian Jackson of New Castle; and several nieces and nephews who adored their "Uncle Monte." He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Jesse and Joanne Jackson.
Monte’s legacy lives on in the music he played, the loved ones he inspired, and the community he was part of. His unique voice, witty sense of humor, and sarcastic personality will be deeply missed.
Graveside services will be at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, June 19, 2025, at South Mound Cemetery, West Lawn Addition. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Art Association of Henry County at www.henrycountyarts.org, or the Wheeler Mission in honor of Monte's lifelong dedication to music and community.
