Peggy C. Colbert

Peggy C. Colbert, 91, of New Castle, died peacefully at home with her family Sunday afternoon, December 14, 2014 in New Castle, IN. Peggy was born March 12, 1923 to the late Robert Huey Cox and the late Alma Hamilton Cox in Blue Springs, Mississippi.

She was baptized into a Baptist congregation at around age 13. She attended high school in Sherman, MS but, after marrying the late Trusty M. Whitehead, she graduated high school in Kilmichael, MS. She attended Business College in Memphis, TN. Peggy held secretarial positions at several businesses, including Sears, Roebuck & Co. and General Electric in Memphis, TN and the law office of Bobby Jones in Atlanta, GA. While living in Atlanta, she attended interior design school and began pursuing her career in interior design as an independent business woman. Peggy Colbert Designs clients included both businesses and private individuals in Florida, Tennessee and Mississippi. She served on the board of Brooks Art Gallery in Memphis, TN. Peggy enjoyed golfing, gardening and football.

Peggy is survived by one son, Trusty Michael (Linda) Whitehead of New Castle; two grandsons, Trusty Michael Whitehead II of New Castle and Christopher Paul (Melissa) Whitehead and two step grandchildren of Dallas, TX; three brothers, Jack S. Cox (the late Jo Ann Mitchell Cox) of Tupelo, MS, William Harold Cox (the late Royce Mires Cox) of Mount Juliet, TN and James H. (Joanne) Cox of New Albany, MS; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. 37 years ago Peggy welcomes into her life her extended family which at the time included step granddaughters, Bamba Clock, Shanon McFalls of New Castle, IN, Ronica (Kyle) Duffin of Shakopee, MN, step grandson, Shane (Liz) Douglas of Yorktown, IN. Throughout the years her family grew to include 10 great grandchildren, and seven great-great grandchildren all of whom loved Peggy dearly.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Lester Cox, who died at age 18 months; her late husband, Vincent Colbert; a step grandson, Derek Douglas; a step great grandson, Derek Douglas II; a step great-great grandson, Dusty McFalls all of New Castle, IN.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph’s Indian School, PO Box 326, Chamberlain, SD 57326.
