Phyllis Louise “Nanny” Moore, 67, of New Castle passed away Wednesday, July 15, 2026 at IU Health Ball Hospital. She was born September 15, 1958 in New Castle to the late Otha Dean and Mereal Agnes (Lathem) Goodwin.
Carefree, nurturing, and a stranger to no one, Phyllis was a woman whose vibrant spirit truly defined her as the life of the party. Born and raised in New Castle as one of eighteen children, she developed a natural, deep-seated instinct for care giving that extended far beyond her own kin; she looked after the neighborhood children as if they were her own, embodying a stubborn, independent, and strong-willed nature in everything she did.
Her unwavering dedication was perhaps most visible during her many years as a school crossing guard at Wilbur Wright Elementary, where she fearlessly put herself in harm's way to ensure the safety of the children she served. Whether she was enjoying a long walk, sitting by a relaxing bonfire or simply basking in the joy of having her family and grandchildren gathered around her, Phyllis lived a life defined by love and courage. She leaves behind a legacy of warmth and strength, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
She is survived by the love of her life of 42 years, Charles Michael Moore; children, Donny Ray (Sabrina) Young, Sheena Moore (Erica Dalton), Kylie Moore (Lydel Jenkins), Austin (James) Poff; grandchildren, Taylor (David) DeTar, Carter Moore, Madi Young, Luke Poff, Revan Young, Aries Young, Cailynn Moore, Eli Poff, Tyson Jenkins, Jamison Bo Young, Lyric Jenkins and Grayson Dalton; great grandchildren, Hunter, Lachlan, London and Jordan DeTar; siblings, Betty Kemmer, Wilma Clark, Susie Goodwin, Linda Jones and Michael Goodwin; sisters-in-law, Connie Ryan and Terry Morgan and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her siblings, Elsie Madden, Mildred Clayborn, Vernon Goodwin Sr., Bill Goodwin, Robert Goodwin, James Goodwin, Herbert Goodwin, Elizabeth Wilson, Larry Goodwin, Butch Goodwin, Dixie Goodwin and Steve Goodwin.
Services will be held at 6:00 p.m. Monday, July 20, 2026 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Steve Arnett officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Multiple Sclerosis Foundation by Clicking Here.
