Rayburn “Rug” Lee Richmond, 64, of Carthage, passed away on July 25, 2026. He was born in Rushville on September 30, 1961, to the late Bobby and Mertie (Dyer) Richmond.
Rug spent his early years attending school in Carthage until his freshman year. He was a man of many trades and talents, working at various times as a saw mill worker, bartender, mower of yards, and welder. Yet among all his jobs, none mattered more to him than his role as a father. As a dad, he dedicated himself fully—attending every one of his son Robert's games and even some practices.
Rug loved rock and roll, with a special fondness for the bands Journey, Kiss, and Motley Crue. His passion for sound was evident to everyone who visited his home, where he delighted in showing off his big Bose stereo.
A devoted sports enthusiast, Rug was a loyal supporter of Indiana’s teams: the Pacers, Fever, Colts, and IU. Some of his favorite athletes were Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck, Caitlin Clark, and Reggie Miller.
Rug enjoyed spending time with friends at the bar. He easily struck up conversations with anyone, starting many friendships over the years. Special friends who held a significant place in his life include Alan Stewart, Shannon Elmore, Chris Ebbert, Chris Chappel, Charles Sanders, Robert Conley, and David Sweet.
Rug enjoyed riding scooters around town. His prized gloss black moped often carried him around town; he managed to put 30,000 miles on it, many of those alongside friends. Relaxing rides with his dogs and scenic car trips were among his favorite pastimes, and he cherished time spent vacationing in Myrtle Beach. Rug’s favorite meals were supreme pizza and soupbeans, and cornbread, and he enjoyed watching western shows.
Those left to cherish his memory include his son, Robert Richmond; his siblings, Marketta Humes, Brenda Richmond, Shelle (Charles Sanders) Richmond, and Joe (Jeri) Richmond; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Rug was preceded in death by his brother, James Richmond.
Services will be held at 5:00pm on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in Knightstown with Pastor Aaron May officiating.
