Rev. Charles Devon “Charlie” Riggs, 85, of New Castle passed away Saturday, February 7, 2026 at his home. He was born October 3, 1940 in New Castle to the late Milford and Mary Mossaline (Kendall) Riggs.
Charlie proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam era. A man of deep faith and lifelong service, he completed three years of Bible college and devoted 41 years to ministry as a pastor at Shirley Gospel Mission, faithfully serving his congregations and community until his retirement, less than two years ago.
In addition to his pastoral work, Charlie was employed by Dana Corporation (formerly Perfect Circle), retiring after 30 years of service. He continued his commitment to service through his work for 21 years as a school bus driver for Knightstown Schools.
Charlie enjoyed crossword puzzles and spending time with his family. His fondest memories included getting married and honeymooning throughout Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and France, as well as visiting the Normandy battlegrounds of World War II—experiences he treasured deeply.
Charlie will be remembered for his steadfast faith, strong work ethic, and dedication to serving others throughout every season of his life.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Gisela (Licht) Riggs, whom he he married May 28, 1963; children, Denise (David) Dollens of Fortville; Sharra (Dan) Derscheid of Evart, MI and Brian Riggs of New Castle; grandchildren, Connor Derscheid, Kyra Derscheid, Trevin Derscheid, Logan Derscheid, Kaeden Riggs, Kelden Riggs and Ciara Dollens; siblings, Jackie H. Riggs of New Castle and Dale (Vicki) Riggs of Knightstown.
In addition to his parents, Charlie is preceded in death by a son, Kevin Riggs and siblings, Verlin Wallace, Earl Gene and Claire Mondalene.
The family would like to say a special thank you to his Keystone Hospice team: Kathy Hanson, Kelsea Williams, Julia Harkel and Chaplain Dan Richwine.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 14, 2026 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Jr. Maloyed and Pastor Steve Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cove Cemetery in Knightstown with military rites provided by a contingent of the US Army and the Knightstown American Legion Post #152.
