Richard "Dick" Lee Johnson

Richard “Dick” Lee Johnson, 94, of New Castle passed away Sunday, May 25, 2025 after a recent move to The Willows of New Castle. Dick and Doris had lived in their New Castle residence the last 61 years. He was born June 5, 1930 in Sulphur Springs, Indiana to the late Luther and Charlotte (DeGroff) Johnson.

Dick was a 1948 graduate of Mt. Summit High School. He retired from Modernfold New Castle Plant, following 44 years of service and in his earlier years was employed by New Castle Casket Company. For 15 years following retirement, he mowed lawns in New Castle. Dick was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He attended First United Methodist Church and enjoyed woodworking, HO model trains, making wind chimes, camping and visiting the gas engine show in Portland, IN. Dick was a member of the Rose City Vagabonds Chapter of the National Campers and Hikers Association for over 40 years.

He is survived by his wife of 76 years, Doris Eckrote, whom he married on April 9, 1949; daughter, Cheryl (Tony) Wright of New Castle, IN; grandchildren, Matt (Amy) Wright of West Lafayette, IN and Amanda (Zac) Jones of New Castle, IN; great grandchildren, Jacob and Mason Wright and Makenzie and Dylan Foga and several nieces and nephews, Mark (Linda) Johnson, close nephew also lives in New Castle.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Velma Ashby and Donald “Gene” Johnson.

Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, May 31, 2025 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastor Cindy Upchurch officiating. Burial will follow at South Mound Cemetery, West Lawn Addition. Military Honors provided by contingents from the U.S. Army, American Legion and VFW.
