Rita Mae Howard, 71, of New Castle, passed away on February 20, 2026, surrounded by her family. She was born on January 12, 1955, in Salyersville, KY to the late Walter “Jack” and Gelena (Workman) Slusher.
Rita dedicated many years of her life working on a tomato farm. She was not just a hard worker; she was a shining example of how dedication can lead to a fruitful and fulfilling life. Her friends and family often remarked on her driven spirit, which inspired those around her to strive for their best.
Growing up in a large family of eight children, Rita understood the importance of connection and support. She brought that same energy into her own family, becoming the best mom anyone could ever ask for. As a homemaker and caregiver, she poured her heart into nurturing her loved ones, exemplifying what it means to be selfless and caring in every interaction. Rita looked forward to countryside drives with her daughter Dawn, and she always looked forward to family get-togethers. With her loving and friendly demeanor, Rita never met a stranger; if you knew her, you loved her. She was always putting others first and extending her hand to help anyone in need.
Rita was a faithful member of the Jehovah's Witness community, where she found strength and solace among her friends and fellow believers. Music and dancing were passions that lit up her spirit, and in her later years, she embraced the role of becoming a self-proclaimed rockstar, picking up different instruments, including a keyboard gifted by her son and a bass guitar she discovered at a yard sale. Her creative side shone bright in her love for crafting, and she cherished spending time with her grandkids.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Dawn (William) Beach, Lori Simmons, Amy Howard, and Dan Howard; 6 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; and siblings, Michelle Ruble, Jolinda Morris, James Slusher, and Rick Slusher.
In addition to her parents, Rita was preceded in death by her siblings, Lora Ann Rogers, Walter Slusher Jr., and Michael Slusher.
There will be a visitation to honor Rita from 10:00am to 12:00pm on Friday February 27, 2026, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle. A private graveside service will be held following the visitation. You may express condolences or share a memory of Rita at www.hinsey-brown.com.
