Rosellen Shore

July 2, 1931 — October 6, 2023

Rosellen Shore, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, dedicated public servant, and fierce advocate for those in need, died Friday, Oct. 6, 2023, at The Willows of New Castle. She was 92 years old.

Born July 2, 1931, in New Castle, she was a daughter of Dexter and Lucile Allen. A 1949 graduate of Mooreland High School, Rosellen married her high school sweetheart, Marion Eugene Shore, on Nov. 20, 1949. They were married for more than 73 years and together raised a family that included three children, five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Family members smile when recalling Rosellen’s passion to celebrate Christmas in a giving way. Each Christmas Eve, she would lead them in Christmas caroling at nursing homes and shut-ins. This was a prerequisite before anyone could sit down for the holiday meal. At the time, the tradition was met with a few complaints here and there, but now, family members look back and cherish those memories.

Rosellen was selected to complete the term of Henry County Treasurer after Homer Crandall passed away in 1973. In 1974, she became the first woman elected Henry County Treasurer and served in that role four more years. She had previously served for six years as a clerk in the auditor’s office and worked for nearly five years as a deputy treasurer under Crandall.

In addition to being a member of the Indiana State Treasurer’s Association, Rosellen was a member of the Altrusa Club. Her many friends may also remember her positive demeanor as a counselor at the Diet Center, Indiana Yearly Meeting committees and Whites Institute Residential Board in Wabash, Ind.

Rosellen was also a long-time member of the Mooreland Friends Church, where she served as church treasurer, Sunday School teacher and youth leader. Rosellen sang in numerous trios and quartets. She and Marion went on many mission trips to Haiti and Jamaica through Christian Service International.

She enjoyed bowling, IU and Blue River Valley basketball, painting, reading and music. She especially loved family time at Lake Webster. She was famous among family members for her pumpkin chocolate chip cookies, especially with the grandkids.

Rosellen is survived by her husband, Marion; three children, Melody (Ron) Radford and Marion “Bud” Shore (Linda), all of New Castle, and Dawn (Michael) Rogers, Westfield; five grandchildren, Meggan (Josh) Brumbaugh, Fishers; Jillian Radford, Noblesville; Dr. Sarah Shore-Beck (Jason), Noblesville; Katelyn Rogers (fiancé Kevin Kaspar) of Carmel and Mike Rogers of Westfield; six great-grandchildren Haidyn, Tessa and Cole Brumbaugh; Hudson, Hadley and Holton Beck; and her caregiver, Melinda Martin, who has been a godsend to the family over the past eight years.

In addition to her parents, Rosellen was preceded in death by an infant sister.

Rosellen’s family is grateful for the compassionate and diligent care provided by the staff at The Willows of New Castle as well as Henry County Hospice. Memorials in honor of Rosellen may be sent to Blue River Valley Dollars For Scholars, Box 233, Mt. Summit, IN 47361 or Mooreland Friends Church, 101 N. Jefferson St., Mooreland, IN 47360.
