Sally Johanna Knarr, 88 of New Castle, Indiana, went home to be with the Lord on September 14, 2025.
Born in Detroit on November 6, 1936, to Bert and Lily (Kissane) Van Dyke, Sally attended Utica High School and Warren Business College. Following her natural gift with numbers, Sally became an accountant and was employed at several different firms, moving from Michigan to Indiana in the early 1980s where she worked for the New Castle Henry County Public Library, retiring in 2015. Sally was a valued employee who brought kindness, care, and her love of numbers to work every day.
Known for her warm heart and steady spirit, Sally had a special way with people. Whether at work or in her personal life, she always had a kind word, a helping hand, a smile, and a deep appreciation for those around her. Sally was also active with the Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Business Professional Women organizations throughout her life.
To those who knew her best, Sally had a wonderful sense of humor, a subtle wit, and a quick mind, always ready with the perfect ending to a sentence or a clever remark that brought laughter to those around her. She was a longtime member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, where she dedicated her time to helping others and found great joy in being a part of the community of faith.
In addition to her parents, Sally was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Benson; brother Bert Van Dyke and partner Robert F. Knarr.
Beloved aunt and friend, Sally will be remembered by long-time co-worker and friend Brenda Martinez; and by Sally's relatives in Michigan, Illinois, and Nebraska: Bert (Carly) Van Dyke, Bruce Van Dyke, Sue Huttinger, Patricia Van Dyke, Bonnie (Abe) Clark, Steve (Signe) Benson, and Beth (Tracy) Morgan.
A graveside service will be held at 9:00 a.m. Friday, November 21, 2025 at South Mound Cemetery in New Castle. Memorials in Sally J. Knarr's name may be made to the New Castle Henry County Public Library. You may express condolences or share memories of Sally at www.hinsey-brown.com.
