Shirley (Dobbs) Hines Pierce, 79, of New Castle passed away at St Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis after a brief illness. She was born in New Castle on August 29, 1945 to the late Everett and Juanita Dobbs.
Shirley was a 1963 graduate of New Castle Chrysler High School. In her later years she enjoyed getting together with her former classmates.
She married her first husband, Gilbert, in July of 1966. They had two children, Melissa and Matthew and she was a stay-at-home Mom when her children were small. Later she worked at Kabert Industries in Lynn for several years before her retirement. Shirley was very involved with her kid’s activities and was an active leader in the band boosters for Randolph Southern Band. One of the other parents said she liked Shirley’s direct approach, and “you didn’t have to wonder where she stood on an issue!” She also loved watching Matt on the baseball field or any sport he was part of.
After Gilbert’s passing in 2013 she met and married the late Ed Pierce in 2017. He too had lost his partner of several years and they took great pleasure in sharing their lives and interest in traveling and just having a good time.
Shirley is survived by her children Matthew (Nerissa) Hines and Melissa (Daniel) Thornburg, and three grandchildren (who she adored): Isabelle Horn, and Merriam and Nolan Hines. Also surviving - two sisters, Linda Lewis and Becky Branham as well as brothers Gary (Soni) Dobbs and Steve Dobbs. She will be missed by several nieces, nephews, cousins and special friend Judy Stearns and Landon….an “adopted” grandson.
Services will be held at 12:00pm Friday, September 13, 2024, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service in New Castle with Pastors Joe Mcintosh and Dale Bales officiating. Burial will follow in New Liberty Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at the funeral home. You may express condolences or share memories of Shirley at www.hinsey-brown.com.
