Sondra Sue Garris

Sondra Sue Garris, 84, of Knightstown passed away Saturday, May 9, 2026 at her residence. She was born on February 6, 1942 in New Castle, Indiana to the late Woodrow and Lola (Gilbert) Porter. 

She was a 1960 graduate of Knightstown High School. Sondra worked at P. R. Mallory in Greenfield then went to R. C. A. in Indianapolis. But the best job she loved the most was at Allison Gas Turbine, on the west side of Indianapolis. She was a grinder operator making parts for helicopters. Sondra retired from Allison on March 1, 1993. After that, she and her husband spent the winters in West Palm Beach, Florida then in the summer months, they enjoyed camping and traveled to many states from the East Coast to the West Coast. She loved to cross stitch and crochet, making many afghans through the years. Sondra married the love of her life on November 17, 1962, Billy L. Garris, which they spent 55 years together until his passing in 2017. She was a member of the Eastern Star in New Castle, the UAW Local 933 in Indianapolis and was a longtime member of Smyrna Baptist Church in Spiceland. 

She is survived by her son, Bill L. Garris, Jr.; grandsons, Brock Garris, Bo Garris, Brett (Gretl) Garris, a granddaughter, Brenna Garris; great grandchildren, Karmine Garris, Marissa Wright, Justice Garris, Bo Garris Jr., Georgiana Garris, Ryan Garris, Rose Garris and Porter Caplinger. 

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Billy L. Garris, Sr.

Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, May 14, 2026 at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service, Knightstown Chapel with Pastor Tony Darling officiating. Burial will follow at Glen Cove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 13th at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers and gifts, monetary donations may be made to the Knightstown Youth Sports, 343 N.
