Stephen Scott Brooks

Stephen Scott Brooks, 76, of Knightstown passed away on Saturday, August 29, 2026, surrounded by his family. Steve was born on November 7, 1949, in Indianapolis to the late Carlos “Jake” and Betty (Moore) Brooks.

Steve attended school in Mays until the consolidation into Rushville High School where he excelled as an athlete and graduated in 1967. After high school, Steve chose to enlist in the United States Army during a time of war. He served his country with a tour in Vietnam before returning home to continue his education at Ball State University, graduating in 1974. While in college, Steve met Lois Alban, and over their 55 years together, they built a life centered on family and filled with wonderful memories.

For 44 years Steve owned Brooks Insurance Agency, retiring in May of 2025. Having a heart for his community, Steve was a member of Knightstown United Methodist Church and gave time to many organizations such as the VFW, American Legion and the Knightstown Chamber of Commerce where he served on several committees.

Steve was a gifted storyteller, known as a fun-loving man who could light up a room. Traveling with family and friends was one of his many joys in life. His especially enjoyed 30 years of going on Canadian fishing trips in pursuit of catching “The Big One.”

He cherished time with his children and had fun coaching them to championships in both baseball and basketball. To his 13 grandchildren, Steve was a beloved “Grandad.”

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Lois Brooks; children, Amy (Brian) Ripley, Ben (Megan) Brooks, and Jenny (Josh) Barley; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Sarah, Luke, Hannah, Catherine and Clare Ripley; Camden, Tyson, Emma, Nolan and Charlotte Brooks; Juliet and Joanna Barley; siblings, Jane Leakey, Duane “Butch” Brooks and Jim “JB” (Cindi) Brooks.

In addition to his parents Steve is preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Deb Brooks and brother-in-law, Dick Leakey.

A Celebration of Steve's Life will be on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at 4:00 pm at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service Knightstown Chapel. Visitation will be from 2:00 pm until the time of the service.
