Terry Edgar Southerland, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at Henry Community Health in New Castle, following a brief illness. Born on June 15, 1948, in New Castle, Terry lived a life marked by dedication to family, work, and community.

Terry’s career was notable and varied. After beginning his working life at Jack’s Donuts and then Amonett Texaco, he went on to work at Metaldyne until 2009. Prior to that, he retired from Chrysler Corporation in 2006, and earlier still, he retired from Modernfold Industries in 1998. His hardworking nature defined much of his life, contributing significantly to the industries and communities he served.

In addition to his professional life, Terry was deeply involved in his community. He was a member of the New Castle Masonic Lodge for 20 years before transferring his membership to the Lewisville Lodge, where he continued his fellowship for several years. He was also a former member of the Knights of Pythias, reflecting a lifelong commitment to camaraderie and service.

Terry had a rich personal life filled with passions and interests. A lover of woodworking, he spent countless hours crafting with his hands. He enjoyed working on vehicles and was an avid fan of western movies. His musical tastes included artists such as ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd which brought him joy throughout his days. Known for his great sense of humor, Terry delighted in teaching his grandchildren, nieces, and nephews playful “bad habits,” creating cherished memories for all.

Most importantly, Terry was a devoted family man. He shared 54 years of marriage with his wife, Becky (Kautz) Southerland, whom he married on January 15, 1972. Together, they built a loving family. He was the proud father of two daughters, Krista Marie Lewis (Jeremy) of Yorktown and Karla Sue Young of New Castle. Terry’s legacy continued through his grandchildren: Brandon (Rahissa) Winningham, Baylea Marie (Josh) Moreira, Jakob Southerland, Karigon Sue (Dylan) Stephens, Brianna Lewis, Zachary (Myanna) Lewis, Elijah Schatzer, and Kayden Ngo. He also cherished his bonus grandchildren, Taniah and Trace Abernathy. His great-grandchildren, Taylen, Briella, Maeva, Aubri, Everly, Amber, and Briar, were a source of immense pride and joy.

Terry’s siblings and extended family remember him fondly. He is survived by his brothers Jimmy (Starla) Amonett and Randy (Deborah) Amonett; sisters Debbie (Rick) Godfrey, Judy Amonett, Tammy Lenz, Johnny Amonett, Elaine Judd, Sherri Sutherland, and Sheila Sutherland; and his dear friend of over 70 years, Bobby Bertram. Several nieces, nephews, and cousins also hold him in their hearts.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Charles Edgar Sutherland and Evelyn P Amonett; stepfather Dale Amonett; brothers Jackie Southerland and Roger Amonett; sister Tina McCoy; and in-laws Judy Miller and Clarence Kautz.

Terry Edgar Southerland will be remembered as a wonderful husband and father, a proud grandpa and uncle to many, and a man whose warmth and humor touched all who knew him. His life was a testament to hard work, love of family, and joy in simple pleasures.
