Wilma June Laird

March 18, 1932 — April 19, 2016

Wilma June Laird, 84 passed away Tuesday, April 19, 2016 following a brief illness. She was born March 18, 1932 in Greencastle, Indiana, to Vernon and Leora Fannin.

Wilma was a loving mother and grandmother, a good friend and neighbor. She was a good listener and spent many hours in recent years talking with her family on long phone conversations, giving advice and cheering them on in whatever they were pursuing. Her happiest years were spent with her family on her parent’s houseboat on Lake Cumberland where she enjoyed rock hunting, star gazing, swimming and going on adventures. Other hobbies include her flower gardens, bird watching, shopping, and playing classical music on the piano, she loved playing and winning the lottery. She also loved and took extra special care of her cat Boston Blackie!

Left to cherish her memory are her mother Leora Fannin, four children: Jenny (Donnie) Sweigart, Steve (Wanda) Jones, Mike (Janet) Jones all of New Castle and Tony (Lisa) Jones of Mustang OK. Grandchildren: Randy (Missy) Sweigart, David Sweigart, Toby Jones, April (Colin) Forrest, Erica Jones, Ashley (Rob) Denton, Shane (Stacey) Jones, Stacy (John) Huffman, Alan Jones, Tonya (Randy) Moore, Jeana Jones and Wendy (Jared) Snyder, nineteen great grandchildren, and several great, great grandchildren, sister Joanne (Doug) Harvey, a special cousin and best friend Sherry Goldsberry, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband Max Laird, father Vernon Fannin and several aunts, uncles, cousins and very close friends.

At Wilma’s request, there will be no public viewing. Graveside services will be private on Monday, April 25, 2016 at South Mound Cemetery in New Castle. Memorial contributions may be given to the North Shore Animal League, 25 Davis Avenue, Port Washington, NY 11050 or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TX 38105, or Paralyzed Veterans, 321 West Main Street, Suite 390, Louisville, KY 40202.
