Wilma M. Sharpe

Wilma M. Sharpe ,97, of Indianapolis passed away peacefully on September 18, 2026. She was born June 26, 1929 in Greensboro, IN to the late Maurice and Helen M. (Archey) Bassett.

Wilma was a devoted member of St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church for over 71 years, where her faith, love, and dedication were an important part of her life. Throughout the years, she faithfully served her church in many meaningful roles, including as a Matron, Trustee, Usher, and Assistant Treasurer. Wilma worked in food service at Subway Supreme Deli Club, of which she was also a member and enjoyed traveling, fellowship, and making cherished memories with her friends. She later retired from Eli Lilly, where she proudly worked in food service for many years. Wilma had a true love for good food and was affectionately known as a foodie. Wilma was also a longtime member of the NAACP. She had a special fondness for collecting hats, a hobby that reflected her unique personality and sense of style.

She is survived by her nephews, Gerald Hunt Jr. and Wayne Griffin, both of Indianapolis; sisters; Sheila Penn and Sharon Maxwell Smith of Indianapolis; and serval nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she is proceeded in death by her brother, Howard Bassett and sister, Nola Griffin.

Services will be held at St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church on October 2, 2026, at 12:00pm. 1651 Dr. Andrew J. Brown Ave, Indianapolis, Indiana 46202. Visitation 11:00am – 12:00pm with committal service and burial to follow at Glen Clove Cemetery in Knightstown with Rev. Dr. Regan E. Robinson officiating.
